This year has started off rough, fly fishing in Wyoming has been one challenge after another. For most of the last three months the roads have been terrible or closed, the cold and wind freezing the guides, BOR letting water out of the reservoir, and even localized flooding. But the fish are still doing well and quite frankly haven’t been affected by this hard winter we are having. The last trip out we saw several fish on redds spawning. It is always fun to see them and enjoy hard work it takes to reproduce in the wild. This is part of what makes the Bighorn River such a special place. I do have concern about the timing of today’s flush by the Game and Fish. If this is to help free up spawning gravel isn’t it a little too late? The rainbow have been in full spawn for about three weeks, leave them alone and don’t tread on them!
On a different note the fishing has been great and the fish are working towards faster water. With the conditions they are still tending towards deep runs but the spawn has fish moving and active. Several nice browns and rainbows have been picked up this winter. The spring should be a good one, call us to book a trip today.
