Wyoming Bighorn River (Thermopolis Wyoming)

Weather Conditions: Weather Forecast
Winter is still holding on in Thermopolis, though we’ve had a stretch of decent weather over the past few days. However, both the long-term forecast and the groundhog’s prediction suggest that winter isn’t ready to loosen its grip just yet. Colder temperatures and more snow are expected to move in this weekend, reminding us that spring is still a ways off. If you’re heading outdoors, be prepared for changing conditions, and if you’re thinking about hitting the water, keep an eye on flows and ice buildup. Stay warm out there!
Water Conditions: Current Flows
As of now, the Bighorn River is flowing at approximately 697.9 cubic feet per second (CFS), maintaining a clear flow. These flows have remained relatively stable over the winter, and we anticipate them to stay consistent until mid-April. So, expect conditions on the river to remain unchanged for the time being.
Hatches and Insects:
Currently, trout are primarily feeding on midges and sow bugs. Additionally, flies imitating annelids, such as worms and leeches, have been producing solid results. As we move into the coming months, expect to see an increase in blue-winged olive (Baetis) activity, along with the potential emergence of other mayfly hatches.
Fish Activity:
The fish are active, with most catches being rainbow trout holding in the deep pockets typical of winter fishing. Successful hookups are coming from those deeper areas below swifter currents. Browns and cutthroats have been more challenging to entice, but I’ve had the best luck targeting brown trout in faster water during mid-morning.
Flies:
Dry Flies: Griffith Gnat, Renegade, Mole Midge
Nymphs: Zebra Midge, Mercury Midge, Poison tongue, two-bit Midge, Epoxy Back Sow, Hot Head Ray Charles, Juju Midge, Top Secret Midge
Streamers: Thin Mint, Black Woolly Bugger, Rusty Trombone, Goldie, Winter Wheat
Catches and Success Rates:
Anglers are experiencing a relatively consistent and fruitful time on the water, with fish being caught at a steady rate. The noteworthy aspect is the impressive size of the catches, with the average measuring between 18 to 20 inches. This signifies a robust and healthy fish population, offering anglers the thrill of landing sizable specimens on a regular basis.
Local Regulations and Updates: 2025 Fishing Regulations
General Fishing Tips:
Get Deep when fishing the midges using techniques like drop shot and euro nymphing techniques can get the flies in the zone quicker. There is relatively no pressure currently although that is going to change. March and April will see a lot more pressure as we get into the true spring weather.
Crowd and Access Information:
As fishing pressure increases, anglers must be mindful of the environment, private land, and fellow fishermen. Respecting property boundaries helps maintain access, while good river etiquette—giving others space, keeping noise down, and packing out waste—ensures an enjoyable experience for all. By practicing responsible angling, we protect our waters, uphold sportsmanship, and preserve fishing opportunities for the future.
