Over the past few weeks, there has been a noticeable shift in both weather patterns and stream flows. The temperatures have significantly dropped, now ranging from the teens to the low twenties, bringing cooler weather to the area. This change is bound to have a substantial impact on water temperatures, consequently influencing fish feeding behaviors.
One of the most significant consequences of this temperature drop will be the alteration in the types of bugs found in the water. Keep an eye out for sow bugs, midges, and annelids, as these insects are likely to become prominent components of the aquatic menu in the upcoming weeks. This shift in insect activity will undoubtedly affect the way fish feed, making it essential for anglers to adapt their strategies accordingly.
We have begun to observe some redds in the water, although fish sightings on them have been inconsistent so far. In the coming weeks, fish are expected to migrate to these shallow water riffles and focus their attention on spawning. It’s crucial for anglers to be mindful of these redds during this period. Please refrain from wade fishing around the redds, as this can disturb the spawning process. Additionally, when approaching key spawning beds, make sure to keep your flies out of the water to avoid any unnecessary disturbance to the fish and their habitat.
